34 year old Vivek Kundra, the former chief technology officer for Washington D.C., is now the chief information officer, also known as the CIO, for the United States of America. Vivek Kundra was also a part of President Barack Obama's transition team and responsible for designing the website recovery.gov, which was created to provide information on how stimulus money is being spent.
Vivek Kundra is also known for launching the "Apps for Democracy" contest, which encouraged developers to create applications for the Web and cellular phones that would give Washington D.C. residents access to city data such as crime reports and pothole repair schedules. He expected to get about 10 entries, but instead got 47 apps in one month. Rather than hiring contract developers to create the applications, he spent $50,ooo on the contest and prize money. This saved him over 2.6 million dollars in spending costs for the project.
